The Port of Mahón, Where History Sails With You
They say that the English admiral Lord Nelson described it as the best port in the world, after Havana. And he wasn't wrong. The port of Mahón is one of the longest natural harbors in Europe, with almost six kilometers of protected entrance that for centuries made the island the object of empires' covetousness: British, French, and Spanish fought over these waters like someone fighting for treasure. Aboard our ship, that past comes alive.
We set sail from the dock with the historic center of Mahón behind us and enter a landscape where every shore holds a story. Soon we catch sight of Cales Fonts, the lively port of Es Castell with its colorful houses overlooking the water, heirs to the urban layout left by the English in the 18th century. Further along, the imposing silhouette of the Mahón Lazaretto emerges from the vegetation of La Quarantena Island: built in the 19th century to isolate sailors arriving with diseases from the East, it was for decades one of the most advanced healthcare facilities in Europe and today retains its monumental architecture intact.
We continue sailing and arrive at Illa del Rei, also known as Hospital Island. Its name says it all: the British built Menorca's first military hospital here during their occupation of the island, and its stones have witnessed wars, plagues, and centuries of silence. Today, the island can be visited, and its restoration is one of Menorca's most moving heritage projects. There, you can visit the Old American Military Hospital and the Hauser & Wirth Art Gallery.
There are ways to experience Mahón, and then there's this: slowly, from the water, letting the port tell you all it knows.
