However, all boats, both sailing and motor, can be driven, without power limits and with a length of up to 24 meters with a boating license within 12 miles: a sort of basic license in the world of boating. The full version of this license, which can be obtained with a simple supplementary theoretical exam, allows you to also drive sailing boats and not just motor boats. Obviously it is possible to drive boats that are certified without navigation limits: what matters with this type of nautical license is only the real distance from the coast. The nautical license within 12 miles (i.e. just over 22 kilometers according to the Nautical Code) also allows you to travel light as many safety devices are optional within this distance. For example, you can do without a life raft, barometers, nautical charts, first aid kits, GPS, radar reflectors, etc... in short, quite a bit less stuff. Motorization and nautical license But what are, according to the Nautical Code, the elements related to motorization to be kept in mind to understand whether a nautical license is needed or not? Let's say right away that it is not always mandatory to have a nautical license to pilot a boat with a 1,000 displacement engine, just as not all 4-stroke engines require a licence. Regardless of the distance from the coast and the length of the boat, it is mandatory to have a boating license when piloting a boat with: * engine with more than 30 kW (or more than 40.8 horsepower) * engine with a displacement greater than 750 cc (in case of carburetion or two-stroke injection) * engine with a displacement greater than 1,000 cc (if with 4-stroke outboard carburetion or if with direct injection) * an engine with a displacement greater than 1,300 cc (if inboard 4-stroke carburetion) * an engine with a displacement greater than 2,000 cc (if diesel cycle engine)
